ON AND ON... another month (Part 117f)

ON AND ON... another month (Part117f)

I finished putting the dome together just before the first birthday guests arrived. It was a man that I didn’t recognize driving so after he let his daughter out I went over and introduced myself. It wasn’t that I really wanted to get to know him but more that I needed his help to place the dome out in the yard by the swing set. He willingly helped but because he’d stayed he got blocked in by others delivering their daughters. I don’t remember how many were invited but I do remember that Elle, not wanting to take a chance on the weather, planned for it to be an indoor party. Jean, of course, wanted to go play on her new dome so there was a little friction between mother and daughter. I played “chicken” and retreated to the garage to work on Jon’s campaign sign.

Elle gave up after a while and let the kids come out and play on and around the dome. It was a big hit and as I watched them climb on and over it I was glad that we’d bought it and the frustration of putting it together was worth it. It seemed like all the parents arrived to pick up their kids at the same time. The driveway became clogged within minutes and I had to leave the sign and go play traffic cop, guiding the mothers down the hill, backwards. Out in the road I saw a car pull up just past the driveway and I saw a large man get out. I sort of recognized him but wasn’t sure. He knew my name and called out to me. Then I saw this little blonde haired woman get out the passenger door... it was Nancy, Elle’s college roommate. I hadn’t seen her since I’d quit racing the horses. She still looked the same... big smile, vivacious and painfully thin. The big man was her husband, Mike. We’d met once so that was why I had sort of recognized him. As we walked up the driveway I had a flashback to when we’d met and it wasn’t all that good. I’d been left with the impression that he was a blowhard, full of himself and wild ideas on how to make a “killing”.

Elle was just starting to clean up from the party and when she saw Nancy, was overjoyed. Not to drag this out but Mike had lost his shirt on a couple of his schemes out in the Mid West and they’d come back East to stay with Nancy’s parents until he got a job or put another wild idea into motion... and that’s why they were at our house. A while back I mentioned that my brother had quit his job as the manager of the largest gas station in town to take a job selling boats. Mike’s new idea was to buy a couple of sailboats and then let them out as charters (renting them out). He’s done some research and decided on a manufacturer and the closest dealer was the one my brother worked at. In the course of conversation, they asked him if he was related to me and, of course, he said “yes” and he gave them directions. He’d contracted to buy two 25 foot sailboats from my brother and somehow managed to talk him into handling the actual charters. What was ultimately ironic was that neither Mike nor Nancy had ever been sailing.

Elle invited them to stay for supper and by the time they left I hoped that I’d never see Mike again, but with his new “business” only 12 miles East, I just knew I’d be seeing more of him. Nancy was a nice person and, as they drove away, I remember Elle making the comment that she felt sorry for her. I’d left all my sign painting things in the garage and needed to clean the brushes and put them away. Elle had to put the girls to bed so when I walked into the house I was surprised to see Elle in one of my T shirts and panties waiting for me. I went up to her and, as usual when the kids weren’t around, put my hand between her legs. She was wet... which was an open invitation when the kids were asleep. We went right up the stairs and finished off a long day with some pleasurable “entertainment”.

Memorial Day was actually on Sunday which meant it was celebrated on Monday. I spent most of Sunday finishing the sign so that I could deliver it on Monday. I loaded it (4“x8’) into the station wagon about mid morning thinking that Jon would be done with his milk deliveries by then. When I pulled into his yard his truck and the station wagon that Ginger drove weren’t there. The only time I’d been there was to the party they’d hosted and it had been dark when we arrived. I’d heard so much about their location I decided to  go and take a look for myself. The lot was semi pie shaped in that there was only about 30 feet fronting on the street but there was over 100 feet fronting on this small spring fed lake. The house was at the highest part of the property and from there it gradually sloped down to the water’s edge. I could easily see why they compromised on the size of the house to get such a beautiful location. There were a few small trees between the house and water but not enough to obstruct the view. Because of the gradual slope they had a deck off the rear of the house in place of a patio. As I waked back up towards the house I spied something that really caught my attention... a small clothes line that ran from the house to a small flag pole attached to the outer edge of the deck. There were a couple of things hanging off it and one of them had the distinct look of panties.

When I pulled into the yard I made the assumption that no one was there but as I looked up at the clothes line reality took hold so I decided it best if I go to the front door and knock before climbing the stairs up to the deck to do an ”inspection“. All the knock got me was the barking of the dog I didn’t know they had. I waited a few minutes and knocked a second time only to get the same response. Emboldened by that I headed around to the back again. I remember going up the stairs two at a time. I wasn’t worried about the neighbors because the ones to the North were blocked by a thicket and the house to the South was closer to the road than Jon’s. I went right for the panties and the first thing was that they felt a little different than any that I’d felt before. They were definitely made with a manufactured fabric but it wasn’t the type of nylon that I was used to. Knowing I didn’t have a lot of time I unclipped them from the line and looked for the label... another first... Seampruf. They were size 6 but, as I’ve mentioned before, Ginger could’ve stood to lose a few pounds. I quickly hung them as i found them and double timed it back down the stairs. I ended up leaving the sign leaning against the front porch and headed home, wondering where she bought the panties. Something new to look for.

ON AND ON... another month (Part 117e)

ON AND ON... another month (Part 117e)

The meeting wasn’t exactly what I expected. It was more of a sales pitch. It opened with a brief mention of the future of banking but quickly went into a description of the company who was going to lead everybody there... Electronic Data Systems (EDS). Instead of describing what banking would be like the speaker focused on his company and what they did. Reading between the lines, I was able to figure out that we, the banks, would eventually no longer be doing the record keeping but that it would be done by a company such as EDS. The guy did mention that telephone lines would be used to transmit the data. I felt sort of stupid listening to him as I had little, if any, knowledge of this whole concept. I felt a little better after the meeting when I talked with some other bankers who didn’t know much about it either. Most of the others were, like me, out of the “mainstream”. It certainly was a forward thinking way of handling our record keeping and we all wanted to know more about it. However, the speaker had to make a flight back to Texas so all we were left with was some promotional material from EDS.

After the meeting, out in the parking lot, a man I’d seen at the meeting was looking at a flat tire on his car. I asked if he needed help and he said he could use a hand. He said the only jack he had was the flimsy thing that came with the car. I knew I still had the bottle jack that I’d used with the race car so got it out and started jacking the car up. I also had a lug wrench which was more practical than the one he had. Within minutes I had the flat tire off and his spare on. He was very appreciative and introduced himself as a vice president of one of the larger banks in the group. He asked what I thought about the meeting and speaker. I admitted my ignorance on the idea of having a service company doing the record keeping and he smiled. He told me that he had to get going but he gave me a business card and told me to call him in the morning.

It was a short trip home as my mind was filled with all sorts of ideas on what it would mean to go to an outside service company. The first was that it would mean we no longer would have ledger cards and that would definitely lessen the amount of time to wait on a customer. That would also mean the long lines during our “busy periods” would be somewhat shorter. However, there had to be some drawbacks and I had no idea what they would be. I hoped that the guy I’d helped would give me some perspective as it pertained to our individual banks when I called. I gave Hobie an update the next morning and gave him the name of the man who I’d helped and his offer to expand on what we’d heard. The look on his face was hard to read. I couldn’t tell if he approved of me talking with him or not so elected to wait.

As I’ve mentioned, my oldest daughter’s birthday was on Memorial Day weekend and Elle and I’d agreed to buy her the climbing dome she’d wanted. I’d ordered it out of the Sears catalog so had to go pick it up. I ran into Rob, Jon’s (the milkman) brother who asked me about the sign I’d promised to do for his campaign. I didn’t have an answer but knew I had to get started on it. I also knew that Elle wanted me to get the dome built in time for her birthday party the next day. On the trip home that night I was really stressed. There just were not enough hours in the day.

The climbing dome was the obvious thing to attack first. When Jean got up that Saturday morning we gave her the box to open. Being all metal and with 60+ pieces there was no way she could even pick it up so all she could do was to peel the wrapping paper off. We did put the picture of it from the catalog in her birthday card so she’d know what was in the box. After breakfast I took it outside and opened it only to find that the manufacturer had failed to insert the instructions. I got the idea to look at the picture to get the idea of how it was supposed to go. The next obstacle was the number of machine screws, nuts and bolts. Initially, I was going to build it where Elle wanted it placed in the rear yard but after seeing all the screws I decided the driveway was a better place to start so I wouldn't lose any of them. Jean and her sister were there to supervise as well. It was frustrating trying to figure out how the pieces went together. Trial and error was the only way to go which made it slow going. I took a break and the girls decided to play in the yard between the house and garage. When I came back out there was Sophie from next door watching them.

I knew Celia, her mother, wouldn’t be far behind. As soon as I appeared my girls headed back to where the dome was. I invited Celia to bring Sophie out to where I was working and show it to her. They watched for a while and when Sophie seemed really interested it surprised me. When Celia suggested that Sophie go home with her she resisted. I didn’t want a “scene” so told Celia that it would be OK to let her stay and watch. It was with some reluctance that she finally left. It was a little while later that Sophie moved closer to the dome and asked if she could help. That was also a surprise because she usually didn’t say very much of anything. I told her she could bring me some of the red pieces and I watched as she squatted down to pick them up. She was, as usual, was wearing a dress and when she squatted down to get them I got a clear view of her pantied crotch. It was the hardest thing for me to look at a fully grown female and to realize that she had the mind of a child. She took her time picking up some of the red pieces (there were also white ones) before bringing them over to me. I actually remember wanting to say something to her about the way she squatted down but didn’t know how she’d take it... so I said nothing and tried not to look when she went to get more pieces. Thankfully, Elle called us in for lunch and Sophie, reluctantly, went home. Whew!

ON AND ON... another month (Part117d)

ON AND ON... another month (Part 117d)

Elle was in the last group to go. She got me aside and told me that she’d “leaked” from laughing so hard and that she’d gone into the bathroom and slipped on a pair of sanitary panties. After seeing the chaos that had played out in front of her through the first two groups she didn’t want to embarrass herself being seen in them. I had to remind her that they were designed for women who had their periods and weren’t that uncommon. She thought about it for a few seconds and then agreed with me. Elle was wearing a skirt that came to just above her knees. The good thing for her was that the skirt was flared so if and when she did have to spread her legs she wouldn’t have to hike it up. As she and the group took their positions I remember thinking that I would have loved to have had a camera.

The most memorable part from the third group was that Rob was a part of it. That didn’t stop him from continuing his “play by play” and he kept everybody laughing. He was, by far, the largest player which made it hard on the others. He took up so much space that they quickly fell, literally, by the wayside, Elle included. I only got one quick peek up her skirt and I really couldn’t see much at all. When they finished she came over and asked about it. I don’t think she believed me when I told her. I definitely remember thinking that I wanted to play Twister again!

Bob stopped me as the party broke up to give me $100 towards the purchase of my Sailfish but wanted to come and get it the next day. As I’ve said, I didn’t really know him as the only times I’d ever seen him were at the few parties we’d attended together. I told him I really needed the money first and he got a little defensive. I wanted to stay on the good side of him so told him that I was willing to put his name up for membership in the sailing club. I’d given it quite a bit of thought because it meant that I’d have to go back to paying dues again, something that definitely wasn’t in the budget. That seemed to appease him.

I do remember reprising my episode with Ginger while lying in bed that night. That was the second wetting incident that I was aware of with her and I wondered if she didn’t have the same problem as Elle. I also thought about my commitment to painting a campaign sign for Jon and wondered where I’d find the time. The election was only a month away and my “to do” list was already quite long. Before we got in bed Elle had also reminded me that Jean, our oldest, was going to have a birthday Memorial Day weekend. We’d more or less promised to get her a climbing dome as her present. She’d seen one while visiting one of her new friends and just wouldn’t stop talking about it. I’d done the research and the cost wasn’t that great but I would have to put some 60 odd pieces together with small nuts, bolts and washers... another time consuming project. I lay there awake for quite a while.

When I walked past Trish on Monday morning I could see she had a weird smile on her face. I stopped and asked her about it but all she did was try to hide her face from me. A few minutes later I noticed Laura at her desk and wearing a plaid pinafore. To me it was perfect for her. When Trish saw me looking at her she came over and said that was one of her new things. I felt really good about it and told Trish. She smiled. It was later that week when Trish pointed to the dress that Laura was wearing and I knew that it was another one of the purchases. When Laura didn’t say anything to me I was pretty confident that Trish hadn’t told her about my involvement and I was glad.

The bank was a member of a group of eleven similarly chartered banks that served a fairly large geographical area that was located outside the city. The group held meetings for bank officers on a monthly basis where we’d be updated on general trends in the financial field and how to get assistance in interpreting changing banking regulations. The meetings were held in the same town that my old sailing friend, Buddy, lived and where the Summer neighbor to my parents, Ali, had her children’s clothing store (and where I’d bought the Lollipop panties) so I was somewhat familiar with the area. J J and I had attended a couple of the meetings and I’d reported back to Hobie that I felt they were worthwhile. The topic for the May meeting was on new ways that banks would be handling their transactions with customers in the future. It was so broad that Hobie didn’t think it was worth me making the trip but I prevailed. J J was supposed to go with me but then an emergency with one of his kids came up and I was on my own. It was a slow day so I left a little early with the thought I might stop by Ali’s store to say “hello” for old times sake.

It had been well over a year since I’d been there and although I thought I could drive right to her store I was wrong. I continued driving down the street a little further and as I did I saw a name on a building that had recently been on my mind... Bloomingdale’s. It was the store where Jerene’s mother had purchased the new style Carter’s Spanky Pants. I found the parking lot and went right in. About eight or nine of the big department stores centered in the city had opened satellite stores in the area and specifically along this particular street. Because the store wasn’t all that big it didn’t take long to find the children’s department and the Carter’s display. I quickly found the size panties I was looking for and, after checking my wallet, determined that I could buy nine of them. The trouble with that was they only had five of the size 16. Just because I was so excited to have found them I made the decision to buy four of the size 14. I left the store extremely excited and wishing I was headed for home... but the meeting awaited me.

ON AND ON... another month (Part 117c)

ON AND ON... another month (Part 117c)

Because Pat had an agenda, the ”boys“ did not gather in the kitchen as was their usual start to one of these parties. Everybody was herded into a rather large living room and Pat started in with outlining a strategy for Jon’s school board campaign. According to her, the biggest obstacle for him to overcome was the lack of interest by the people who resided in the district. Status quo was the norm. All board members were long time, well respected residents and they were satisfied with the way things were being run in the school. According to Pat there had been some major changes in teaching methods and materials that had not been adopted by the board. She was concerned that her kids, and she made a point of saying that our group had or would have 17 kids in the school within a few years, would have a difficult time in being accepted to a good college if things didn’t change. She went on to say that over the past three years less than 2/3 of the graduating class went on to any higher education. Then she challenged the rest of us to go out and energize the population and to make sure that everyone with kids in school was personally contacted and given material about Jon and his ideas. I can honestly say that she got our attention. I hadn’t given any thought to college for my kids but what she said made sense.

Over the next hour or so each of us volunteered for specific tasks and I agreed to paint a campaign sign to go up on Jon's front lawn. It wasn't that I had the time to do it but everybody else was going to be doing something or other. By then we were ready for some fun, although I surely hoped it wasn’t going to be charades again. It was Phyl who took a box out of her bag and held it up for all to see On the top was the word ”TWISTER“ in bright red letters. Phyl explained that her brother worked for a toy distributor and this was a brand new product that was being delivered to stores the following week. She opened the box and spread out a large plastic mat with colored circles on it. Then she pulled out a board with a spinner on it. We all looked at each other with nary a clue as to what it was all about. Her husband, Bob, then took off his shoes and put his feet on two of the circles at one end of the sheet and we watched as Phyl took up a similar position at the other end. Then he asked someone to spin the spinner and read what was in the space that it pointed to. I don’t remember what it was but they both moved a hand or a foot to a new, different colored circle. The spinner was spun again and they both did what they were told. Before very long they were up against each other and sort of battling to get to the designated hand or foot on the called colored spot. It was wild.

Phyl then gave us the rules for the night. We were going to play as two person teams and no husband/wife were to be on the mat at the same time. If anyone fell or their elbow or knee touched the mat they were out. I looked around at the others and they guys were all smiling but a couple of the women had doubt written all over their faces. It took a bit of persuasion by Phyl to get them all to commit but they did. I, for one, couldn’t wait to start.

I don’t remember all the pairings but I was in the second group to go and I was happy to find Ginger in it with me. I think Phyl was the other female and Pat’s husband (I think his name was ED) as well. Those not in the first group were keen to see how the game played out. I remember that Rob, Jon’s brother, acted as a play by play announcer. The most vivid thing I remember from it was that Nanci, the woman with the wide hips, split the rear seam of her slacks. When she did she immediately fell to her knees to try and hide it and as she did she knocked the others over. With Rob’s commentary we were all in stitches. I remember laughing so hard my sides hurt.

It took a little time for everyone to calm down enough to start the next round. It didn’t take long for us all to get fairly intertwined. I definitely remember being instructed to put a hand on a red dot and the only way I was going to be able to do it was to try and get my arm and hand between Ginger’s spread legs. When I squatted down I knew I was in a precarious position and if anyone bumped me that I’d fall over. I also knew that I was dangerously close to her crotch. She was wearing a short skirt and had hiked it up a bit to be able to spread her legs. If I tried hard enough I was sure I could reach the dot. Ginger was looking right at me so there was no way to try and look up to get a peek. I had to ooch forward to get a few fingers on the spot and then prayed that I could hold on. Rob was still doing his ”schtick”  which didn’t help because he was really funny. I don't know who made the move but all of a sudden there were four bodies piled up on the floor and laughing hysterically.

It took more than a few seconds for me to realize that it was Ginger who was straddling my forearm... and that it was especially warm. There was someone on top of her so it took a little time for her to be able to get up. When she did I had the answer as to why my arm was so warm... it was wet. I only got a very quick look as she rolled over to her knees but I swear I could see the wetness on her panties. By the time I was able to get up I had a very big problem... a bulge! I wont ever  know if anyone saw it but I do remember standing there with a hand in my pocket and feeling very flushed. When I’d calmed down a bit I lifted my forearm up to my nose. There was a definite smell... some sort of perfume. I knew Elle dabbed a bit on her inner thighs all the time hoping to mask the smell of pee. It didn’t diminish the thought that Ginger had peed while on my arm.

ON AND ON... another Month (Part 117b)

ON AND ON... another month (Part 117b)

As usual, Elle was asleep when I got home from the races. The next morning she was all over me about the car and when I told her it was sold I got a “reward“ even though the kids were still in their rooms. At breakfast we talked about what we needed first and I pulled out my wallet. When I put the money on the table there was only $250. I distinctly remember him giving me $50 before he tried out the car and I thought I’d put it in my wallet. Elle had a rule about the clothes I wore to work on or to race the car... they were to be taken off outside the house because she couldn’t stand the smell of burnt oil. So, I went outside and went through my pants pockets and found no money, only a small wrench. I was puzzled, to say the least. Elle thought I might’ve dropped it at the track but I knew that if I had it surely wouldn’t still be there. So, from excitement we (make that I) went to disappointment. However, Elle was still elated that the car was gone.

The following week Trish came to my desk to tell me that she’d come up with an idea as far as clothes for Laura. She (Trish) had been saving money in a jar to buy a TV for her room (she still lived at home). She had around $50 saved and thought she could use it to take Laura shopping and that with Laura’s ”clothing allowance“ she could pay it back. It sounded good to me especially since I’d been unable to come up with any ideas at all. The only thought I had, but left it unsaid, was that $50 wouldn’t go all that far. At least it was a start. Trish then told me she was going to do it Friday after work. I couldn’t wait to see just what they came up with.

Monday morning there was no Trish and there was no Laura. A little after 9am I got a call from Trish. There was a major problem and it had to do with Laura and her new clothes. They’d gone shopping and picked out a couple of skirts and blouses and when Trish took Laura home her father wanted to see just what they’d bought. When he saw the skirts were above Laura's knees he had a fit and told her that if that was what she had to wear at the bank he wanted her to resign.

Long story short... After a lot of yelling and screaming Laura told her father that she wasn’t going to quit and when she did he told her to get out of the house. From what Trish told me he just about pushed her out the door. Because it was family, Trish got her parents involved. The end result was that Laura was now living with Trish and her parents but would still give the bulk of her paycheck to her own parents. Listening to it be explained I immediately thought of Stasia from the first bank that I worked at. I came up with the idea that there was some sort of common sense gene missing from Polish people. In any case, Laura was recovering from all the drama of the weekend and that she, Trish, was helping her to get settled in. She promised that they’d both be in the next day. I hoped so! That night I told Elle about the whole thing and all she could do was shake her head.

Over the weekend Elle had ended up washing the clothes I’d worn to the races and they were stacked at the bottom of the stairs. That was a sign she wanted me to take them upstairs and put them away when I went up to change out of my suit. When I picked up the shirt I felt something a bit stiff and when I took a look I found the missing $50. When the guy gave it to me I’d put it in my shirt pocket. My first thought was to tell Elle but by the time I’d changed I had another idea... like Trish, I’d ”loan“ it to Laura to be repaid from her ”clothing allowance“. From what Trish had told me Laura didn’t get to bring much of anything from her room when she left so she definitely needed more clothes. Trish’s mother was taking care of the everyday things but it would take some time for Laura to get comfortable. By the time I got downstairs to eat I knew that was what I was going to do with the $50.

The next day everyone took notice of Laura in her new clothes. I’ll never forget that first day. She had on a cotton flowered skirt with a pale blue cap sleeved blouse. With her long blonde hair, the soft pastels really worked. She really was a pretty girl... with only her two top front teeth spoiling the whole effect. I actually gave the $50 to Trish and told her not to tell Laura where it came from. She had a sort of smirky smile on her face after I said it but it was up to her to decide. I did ask that she let me know when Laura wore some of the things that money went for. The two of them replicated their shopping of the previous Friday night and I remember Laura seeming especially bubbly as they left the office.

The monthly party that Elle and I seemed to get invited to was to be held at Pat’s house. She, being the head of the school PTA and very much behind Jon (the milkman) to run for the school board, had the word out that this was to be planning meeting to firm up Jon’s campaign. I dreaded the thought. I’d had enough of politics when I worked for the County. But Elle insisted and I was not in a good mood when we drove up the driveway. The house took my mind off just about everything. To begin with was way off the beaten path. The house looked like it belonged in the deep South with columns across the front of it and was completely out of place. Compared to our house it was a mansion. There was also a circular driveway but nothing in the center of it. Once inside, the Southern architectural accents stood out. I was sort of dumbfounded, especially since Elle had told me that Pat’s husband didn’t have an especially prestigious job. However, there we were only it wasn't the antebellum South.

ON AND ON... another month (Part 117a)

ON  AND ON... another month (Part 117a)

Approaching the first of May I was starting to get discouraged. Our “to do” list was growing and yet completed projects weren’t getting crossed off the list. I remember lying in bed and thinking back to when I lived with my parents. My father had the advantage of having my brother and I to help him do the maintenance on the house. I didn’t have any help... it was just me. With warmer weather the lawn needed mowing about every five or so days and it was a pain, both literally and figuratively. The slope on both sides of the driveway was a “bear“ and I’d slipped one night and pulled a groin muscle and that slowed me down on just about anything I needed to do around the yard. I had at least four partially completed projects... the hedge, Elle’s vegetable garden, finishing the screened in porch (I’d discovered that the door I thought went with the screens wasn’t the right one) and I still had to finish painting the trim in all the bedrooms. With the warm weather coming I had to take down the storm windows (they were the old fashioned type that weren’t self storing) and put up the screens. Elle had me take a few off on the first floor and when I did it became obvious that it had been a LONG time since any of the windows had been washed. Another project!

At least work was going rather smoothly. The two recent hires were doing well. Jaz, working with Lorie, was quick to learn the process and got along well with her. Laura, even a shy as she was, had become an object of attention of the men, especially Hobie. There wasn’t a day go by that I didn’t see him stop by her desk and chat for a minute or two. Liz, the auditor was happy to have her helper not be a ”drama queen“ like Laura’s predecessor had been. I commented to Bret that Laura had become like a daughter to her. Liz, married but childless, exhibited a lot more patience with her than with the people she audited. When upset she had a shrill voice that was very recognizable.

Laura was still coming to work and changing her clothes in the ladies rest room. I’d spoken to Trish a couple of times about her situation at home and she’d indicated that it was still a problem. Laura’d been working at the bank for almost two months and it seemed absurd that an eighteen year old girl was being treated like a child by her parents. I’d been trying to come up with a solution to the problem and seemed to be stymied. Since Hobie had taken an interest in her I finally decided to broach the subject with him. He was surprised... and agreed with me. He asked me to get Trish and we all went up to the Board room. I knew Trish was tired of all the drama and she wasn’t too pleased to have to go over it agian. After hearing the story he just sat back and looked out the window. Neither Trish no I knew what to say or do. Finally, Hobie asked Trish if she thought his getting involved would help. She just shook her head and said she didn’t think so as her uncle was very stubborn and that she’d been surprised when he gave in and let her go to work at the bank. Hobie sat there a few more minutes and said he thought it was worth a try.

Without drawing this out... the result was that Hobie got Laura’s father to allow her to have a ”clothing allowance“. When he told me about it I asked him what his thinking had been. His response was that for Laura to continue to work at the bank she needed to be dressed appropriately. At least it was start. When I talked to Trish about it I told her that it would take ”forever” to save enough to buy what she needed what with warm weather upon us. Trish agreed but didn’t offer any suggestions.

May also signaled that the stock car racing season was about to start up again. When I’d found the money in the closet I’d briefly fantasized that I could still keep the car and race it a couple of times. Reality was staring me in the face in that we needed the money and I certainly didn’t have to time to devote to it especially with the new sailboat. My plan had been to take the car to the first practice with a For Sale sign on it. However, it rained on the day designated for practice which meant I had to take the car on the opening night. Elle proved she knew how my mind worked when I hitched the race car to my car when she told me not to even think of racing it.

When I arrived at the track I had a couple of people ask me about the car but they were just “tire kickers” and not serious. One fellow that I recognized but didn’t know asked if her could try the car out on the track. I told him he could if he gave me $50 as a deposit. He hemmed and hawed about it for a few minutes and then pulled his wallet out. I held my breath the whole time he was on the track but he didn’t get into any trouble. After he climbed out he paid me the other $250 but he told me that he wanted me to drive it at least for that night. As soon as he said it I thought of Elle’s words... but immediately rationalized that she meant if it was still my car so said I would. There was one condition and that was that he be listed as the driver. I stayed out of trouble and finished way back. The last thing I wanted was to have the money for the car in my pocket and then wreck it. It was fun though and I knew I'd miss racing.

SETTLING IN... or down, or something like that (Part 116h)

SETTLING IN... or down, or something like that (Part 116h)

It didn’t take long for me to realize that I really shouldn’t have started the hedge project. After about an hour my shoulder, forearm, wrist and hand were hurting... big time. When I got off the stepladder and took at look at my handiwork I could visualize what it would look like when it was completed but that was the big question... how long would it take. Physically, I knew it would be a while before I’d go back up on the ladder.

There was one thing that working on the hedge did accomplish. To finish the part that I’d started (about 5 feet) I had to go over on the neighbor’s yard. As soon as I started in Sophie appeared with her mother watching from the back door. At first she just stood and stared at me but then she started asking questions. It was the first time I’d heard her speak. Looking down at her it was hard to realize that she had a grown up body with the mind of a child. She only stayed for a short while but I was pleased that she felt comfortable enough to talk to me. I really wanted for Elle to meet her and her mother but by the time I’d finished they were both back inside their house.

I arrived home one night the following week and both my older girls were all excited to tell me that they could do “tumblesaults” after supper. I wasn’t sure what they were talking about but Elle whispered to me that they were talking about somersaults. There had been some sort of assembly at school where they were exposed to gymnastics. Elle, who had to take required PE classes in college had learned some basic routines and promised that she’d teach them the proper way. So, after eating and without clearing the table we all retreated to the lawn between the house and garage. The girls wanted to go first and, as expected, all they did was to fall over. It generated a lot of laughter before Elle took over and showed them the proper way to do a somersault. As she did I noticed Sophie and Celia kneeling at the opening in the hedge watching us. I went over and encouraged them to come on over. Elle had done a few somersaults by the time she saw the new audience. I introduced them to her and, surprisingly, Sophie spoke up and said “hello“. Celia asked if it would be OK for Sophie to stay and watch as she had to get back to check up on her husband. Of course Elle said yes.

Sophie, wearing her ever present dress, took a seat on the lawn and watched intently as Elle helped Ann to do a few proper somersaults. Jean was next to go and as Elle helped her Sophie got up and started to try and do one. As you can imagine, doing a somersault in a dress is a ”no no“ but she didn’t understand that. From where I was standing I got a full view of her panties as she fell over. Elle, concerned that she might hurt herself, ran over and told her that she shouldn’t do it wearing a dress. That didn’t go over very well and she immediately tried to do another. This time she ended up lying on her side and I had a very good look at her backside and panty crotch. It appeared that they were nylon, just like the ones I’d taken from the ground under their wash line. Elle tried to reason with her but she wasn’t about to listen. So, rather than create a confrontation, she offered to help her do it right. I thought I was going to get more ”free shows“ but Elle told me to disappear. As I walked to the garage I was consoling myself that I’d at least gotten two peeks.

For a reason that I can’t remember, I didn’t pull my car into the garage that day. I’d been giving some thought to possibly enlarging the garage so I could put both vehicles inside and was, again, concentrating on that. I’d never paid much attention to what was up in the rafters and decided to get the new stepladder and take a look. It turned out to be very fortuitous as I discovered the missing screen panels for the West side porch. As soon as I did I went back to tell Elle. Rounding the corner of the garage I saw Elle holding Sophie’s feet as she flipped her over. Another really good peek! I told Elle of my discovery and that to get them down I’d need her help. It was almost at the same time that Celia appeared at the opening and called Sophie home. As she left she asked if she could come back again and Elle told her she could. The smile on her face was from ear to ear.

The news about the screens made Elle extremely happy. She helped me get them all down and out by the porch. However, upon close inspection they meant a lot more work for me. Of the seven panels, the frame on two of them were broken and they, along with another one and the door, needed to be re-screened. At least as I surveyed them I knew that fixing them would ultimately benefit me. Elle had pictured herself sitting on that porch in the late afternoon while watching the kids play in their playhouse. I just knew I’d be ”rewarded“ for my effort on that project as opposed to my working on the hedge. That thought energized me even if it mean spending more money.

I’d never worked on screens and didn’t have a clue on how to do it. A few days after the discovery of them I ran into Rob (the milkman’s brother) at the diner during lunch. He’d been a painter and done handyman work so I asked him. The next thing I knew he said he’d be over on Saturday. Knowing what you’re doing surely makes things go a lot quicker and by lunchtime the repairs and re-screening were done. By suppertime they’d all been painted. Elle was so pleased that she was ”ready“ for me when I came in to eat. Not only was she wearing the new dress (with the panels) but was wearing two pair of nylon panties. When she served dessert to the kids she came over and stood by my chair. I put my hand up to her crotch and quickly got my ”dessert/reward“. Needless to say it didn’t end there.

SETTLING IN... or down, or something like that (Part 116g)

SETTLING IN... or down, or something like that (Part 116g)

Before going to bed we rearranged our “want/need” list yet again. We’d also created a “to do” list that was loosely connected to the other list. With the weather getting warmer a lot of the items on the “to do” list were in the yard or outside the house. The plans for the house showed a screened in porch but there were no screens. Then there was the formal garden that Elle had started to work on. She also wanted me to spade up some of the lawn out behind the garage so she could have a little vegetable garden like she had in the mobile home park. Speaking of the area behind the garage it was also where I’d parked the race car. Talk about a thorn in my side... because she used the wash line every day she had to walk past it and then she’d needle me about getting rid of it every night. The “to do” list also had me making a sand box for the kids to play in and reassembling the swing set. I also added cutting back the hedge that separated us from the neighbors. There was more but that was more than enough for me to handle. For me, the trimming of the hedge was a priority. It was impossible to ignore as you walked up the path to the house. The problem was that I didn’t know who owned it... me or the neighbor.

When John, the farmer neighbor, and his wife had given me some information about the neighbors to our East I was a bit concerned about them. He’d told me to contact his uncle who’d lived next to them for almost 20 years to get more detail. I’m not sure why I’d put it off but I had and now I had to. I’d only met his aunt and uncle at our house closing and she’d not said a word. But this time it was different. I was on the phone with her for almost a half hour. Elle kept walking past me with a quizzical look on her face. I will say this... I got the information I wanted and a lot that I didn’t.

The story I got was that the man had tried to get an exemption from the draft for WWII to take care of his parents and was turned down and was drafted. Before he shipped out he got married. He was wounded in Italy and had hoped to come home but they sent him back to the battlefront where he was very seriously wounded. Supposedly, a hand grenade exploded right next to him shattering his hip and leaving him with serious internal injuries. In the meantime, his wife had a baby girl. After returning home he, supposedly, found that the baby had been born over ten months after he shipped out. Unable to work and with no money he ended up living with his wife’s parents. When it came time for their child to go school they were told she wasn’t capable of keeping up and were told she should be institutionalized. At that time they called her condition mongolism (now called Down Syndrome). They refused to do it and she’d stayed at home ever since. I was told she was somewhere around 24 years old but was the equivalent of a 4 or 5 year old. Aside from that the lady told me that she’d had no problems with any of them and that she’d become fairly friendly with the woman. The daughter craved attention but was very shy since she never had any exposure to other people. In closing she said she’d only met the man a couple of times in the almost 20 years they’d lived next door and for my wife and I not to be too concerned.

On Saturday morning I started working on a project out on the lawn between the house and garage. That let me have a bit of a view of the neighbor’s yard through the area where the dead part of the hedge was located. I’d been there quite a while and was about to give up on that idea when I saw the girl heading towards their garage. I’d noticed that the mother would stand at the back door when the girl was at the wash line so I went over to the opening and stepped through. I waved at the woman and she, surprisingly, waved back. I made my way towards her and told her my name. She told me her name was Celia and then waved for her daughter to come over where we were standing. I was introduced to Sophie. She, as I expected, didn’t look at me but looked down at the ground. When I finally got a look at her face I could see a bit of the effects of her condition but it was no where near as bad as many others that I’d seen. It took some doing but she finally was coerced in to saying hello. She followed it up with a question about my girls names. After a few seconds she looked up at her mother and asked if she could play with them. I have to admit that I wasn’t all that happy hearing it but Celia told her that it would be up to them to decide. Then she headed for the back door and I finally got to ask about the hedge.

She smiled when I asked and said she didn’t know who owned it but she wasn't going to do anything with it. I told her that I wanted to trim it way down. I pointed at how high it had grown, probably 15 feet on average. She told me that it was probably a good idea. I stood there surveying the length of it and knew I had a real job on my hands. Back in my own yard I took a close look at the thickness of the shoots and realized I’d need to spend more money to buy a lopper as each shoot would need to be cut individually. I also remember thinking to myself that I would only tackle the area between the elm tree and the formal garden, about forty feet. As I stood there I also realized I’d need a taller step ladder... which meant more money out of my pocket. It just didn’t seem to end.

SETTLING IN... or down, or something like that (Part 116f)

SETTLING IN... or down, or something like that (Part 116f)

I know I sat in my car for a while before starting the motor. I had over $800 dollars in cash in my briefcase and even if only $400 was ultimately going to me mine I was trying to prioritize what I’d do with it. Once I got the $300 for my Sailfish I still needed $200 to finish paying for our new boat so that took half of it. I looked at my watch and I couldn’t believe that I’d been in Monte’s office for over an hour. It was time to go. Driving down Main Street I remembered that I’d wanted to stop and see my friend Judith. Most stores closed at 5pm so there was available parking. Even though her boutique was closed I knew the drug store stayed open until 7pm so pulled to the curb. From where I stopped I had to walk past the boutique and as I did I saw this most unique dress. I actually had to stop and look at it.

From the hips on down it was a series of individual panels, about three inches wide in multiple colors with polka dots of varying colors. I stood there staring at it and visualizing Elle wearing it and walking around with the panels swishing around her thighs and knees and giving me teasing peeks of her panties. I had to have it! Not surprisingly, Judith was cleaning up the area behind the lunch counter. She was definitely glad to see me and greeted me with the news that Stasia had just been promoted to office manager. That was good news. She went on to say that she and her son now had their own apartment and that they had pretty much adjusted to urban/suburban life. Of course she asked what had brought me to town but I didn’t want to give her the real reason so said it had to do with my mortgage. Wanting to quickly change the subject I asked about the dress in the boutique window. She laughed.

She explained that she’d seen it on a buying trip and fell in love with it. When she thought about it she wasn’t sure there was a local market for them but bought three anyway. Immediately she started “selling” me on it but I cut her short by saying I wanted one but it had to be size small. She kind of wrinkled her brow for a second and explained that the one size small she had was on the mannequin in the window... but then said she’d be glad to undress it. I asked if I could call Elle since it was obvious that I wasn’t going to be home by 6pm. We’d gone into the boutique and she pointed to the phone on a display counter near the back. While making the call I looked around and saw a VanRaalte  box sitting on the top of the counter. I’d discovered that she was selling the VanRaalte line the last time I’d stopped to see her but didn’t have any money. Now I did.

When Judith returned with the dress I asked her about VanRaalte panties. She was a bit surprised and reminded me that I’d tried to get her to carry my friend Willy’s Evette line of lingerie. She wanted to know what had changed my mind. I couldn’t tell her the real reason (because they had such a large crotch area that provided a very nice VPL) so said that Elle liked the VanRaalte better because they fit like they were made for her. She went behind the counter, asked for Elle’s size and pulled a bin off the shelf. Judith wasn’t the most organized person and her shop showed that. Way too much merchandise and not all that well displayed. The bin of panties was all askew. Judith reached in and pulled out a handful and proceed to try and find some of the VanRaalte. She finally located four pair and then made a comment that she needed to reorder. Without exaggeration she had probably gone through two dozen and they were all lying on the counter. Oh how I would’ve liked to have gone through them myself but she just swept them all up and dumped them back into the bin. I was happy to just have the four as they all fell into the “Fancy Panties” category.

I’m not sure what the cost of the dress and panties came to. At that point I didn’t much care. I just wanted to get home and get Elle into the dress and panties. Even though I had a number of the VanRaalte panties in my stash they weren’t new so there was no way for me to have Elle wear them. Now I had new Van Raalte panties that would be just for her. As Judith was folding them up I noticed her put what looked to be a pair of white shorts in with the dress. I asked what they were and that elicited another laugh. She gave me one of those “looks” that told me I should have known the answer. She then asked if I really thought that a woman would wear a dress like that without something over her panties. I know I stood there with a red face.

By the time I got home Elle had the kids almost fed. I was glad. As they finished up I told her of what I’d worked out about the found money and she seemed pleased with that. The 2 year old was still in her booster chair as I sent the older two off to play and I gave Elle the box with the dress. I’d thought about taking the shorts out but hadn’t. When she opened it they were right on top. I hadn’t paid any attention to them when Judith put them in the box but when Elle held them up they were short... very short. I remember smiling as she held them up. Then came the dress. The look on her face was priceless, a mix of surprise and puzzlement. When she finally held it up in front of herself she had a big frown. She, like me, hadn’t put the shorts with the dress. When I explained it to her she still wasn’t all that excited and asked when and where would she ever wear something like it. I had a big smile and told her that I would be happy if she just wore it around the house and yard. The frown was exchanged for a “knowing” look. I then handed her the panties.

Her immediate comment was to say that she already had too many panties that she wasn’t wearing. I shrugged it off and then started in with my own “selling” job and tried to convince her that they were the “Cadillac” of panties and that they would fit better than any of her others. I didn’t know if they would or wouldn’t but I wanted to see them on her. I offered to do the dinner dishes if she’d just try on the dress and a pair of panties. It was an offer she couldn’t refuse.

SETTLING IN... or down or something like that (Part 116e)

SETTLING IN... or down, or something like that (Part 116e)

When I counted it out there was over $800. My first thought was "finders keepers". Elle had been up at the school for a PTA function that her friend Pat had dragged her to so it was just me to contemplate my "find". That was the money I needed to pay Rex off for the new Sunfish plus. I was so excited and happy that I forgot the girls were asleep right across the hall. I let out for a yell and woke them up. I had to calm down myself to get them back to sleep. By the time Elle arrived home I had it all spent... in my mind. She was excited as well but insisted that I make an effort to find out who it belonged to. There'd only been two owners of the house which would make the search fairly simple... or so it seemed.

I took the money in to work and told Hobie all about it. I respected him because he seemed to never get excited or flustered. I showed him the actual bills and after a few minutes he called me over to stand behind him. He pointed to a place on some of the bills. His finger pointed at a signature on the bills and as he did he turned and looked up at me with a knowing smile.

He'd been a collector of old bills for a long time and had a working knowledge of the people who signed them. His guess was that all the bills were from before WWII based on the names showing for the Secretary of the Treasury. It gave him a clue that it might belong to the original owners. That made it a bit easier for me because I knew that Monte, the Chairman of the Board of the first bank I'd worked for, had married one of the sisters who had built the house. After telling Hobie about that he suggested that I call Monte and ask to meet with him. I guessed that was the proper way to go.

When I called Monte I didn't go into the details of why I wanted to see him. I just told him I'd discovered something in the house that I thought he'd be interested in. He asked if I could be there by 4pm and with an OK from Hobie I was off. I had mixed emotions as I drove there. Driving though the town where I'd spent my first six months in banking I could only thank the good Lord that I'd "escaped" and was where I was working now. When I drove past the drug store and boutique that Judith, the friend I'd made while working there, owned I hoped I'd get a chance to stop to see her on my way home.

Monte had someone I didn’t recognize waiting for me at the back door. As I headed for his office I took a look over at the teller line and saw a few new, younger, faces. Missing was Inez. Once inside Monte’s office I asked about her and was told that they finally had to retire her. It was a bit bittersweet as I knew she didn’t really do anything but was a dear, sweet person. I remembered the night of the big snow when she’d put  Stasia and I up in her house.

Of course Monte was intrigued by what it was that I had discovered. However, he asked how I’d survived my first snow in the house and smiled as I described it. Before I got started on the money he let me know that he’d never actually lived in the house. When he married his wife he already owned a house. He stated that he’d only been a visitor there when courting his wife. Then I told him my story and that I’d come across an envelope behind a small drawer in the bottom of a cedar closet. He had a frown on his face and made the comment that he didn’t know anything about such a closet. I pulled the now ripped envelope out of my brief case and placed it on his desk telling him about the money inside. His frown continued as he reached over to pick it up. As he pulled the money out I told him how Hobie had deduced that the money was pre WWII. As he flipped through it he commented that he could smell the cedar. After a few minutes he picked up the phone and called his wife and asked her to come to the bank.

They lived at the other end of town, not more than a ten minute walk. About 15 minutes later a well dressed, stately looking woman appeared at the door. After introducing me and getting seated Monte told her the story and I distinctly remember her shaking her head from side to side, finally stating that she knew nothing about it. She did remember the cedar closet but that was all. Turning to me she said that after she moved out her sister had moved their father into the house and that he died soon after WWII started. Her sister died a few years later and the house was empty for a few years until the owners who sold it to me bought it in the late 40’s. She had no idea who the money belonged to.

It was at that time that Monte jumped in. He reminded his wife that her father had been hurt quite badly by the depression and that when he moved into the house there was a lot of talk about the situation in Europe. He hypothesized that her father, concerned about what would happen if there was a war, had hidden the money to protect it. I didn’t say anything but just sat and listened. There was some back and forth between the two of them and then the wife, I think her name was Belle, turned to me and said there was no way to know the real story of the money. Then, abruptly, she started asking me about the house and how Elle and I liked it. I obliged her and she seemed pleased that we really liked it. As abruptly as she’d changed the subject from the money to the house she blurted out that I should keep the money but give half to charity. I remember glancing over at Monte and seeing that his face was expressionless. Then she stood up and reached out her hand towards mine. I stood up and shook it not fully realizing what had just transpired. At that point she looked at Monte and told him she’d see him at home, told me it was nice meeting me and walked out the door of the office. Monte had gotten to his feet and after she departed he stood there shaking his head as if in disbelief. He reached out his hand and told me it was heartening to see that there were still people out there who tried to do the right thing. My first thought was that it really hadn’t been me, that it had been at Elle’s urging that I’d changed from my “finders keepers” mindset. I shook his hand and followed his wife towards the back door.

SETTLING IN... or down, or something like that (Part 116d)

SETTLING IN... or down, or something like that (Part 116d)

When I woke up I remember thinking that I'd really bit off more than I could chew. With the mobile home it took but 10 minutes to mow my "postage stamp" yard. It had taken me well over an hour and the scary part was that I'd have to do it again in probably less than a week. Elle was outside trying to clean up what had been a formal flower garden so I knew what was in store for me for the rest of the afternoon.

The next morning we were all getting in the station wagon to go to church when I spied my jacket lying on the seat. That's when I remembered there was something in the pocket. I know I “flushed” when I saw the jacket and I hoped that Elle hadn’t noticed. Later, back at home, I wanted to take the jacket but Elle wanted me to carry our youngest, Kaye. At the door she asked how I’d gotten the jacket wet. I almost dropped the baby. I honestly don’t remember my answer. I do remember that the older two were fussing with each other and Elle stepped in to separate them and threw the jacket over the back of a chair. I never took my eyes off it hoping that Elle would go in the living or some other room allowing me to get whatever it was out of the pocket. It didn’t work that way. She ended up busying herself with getting snacks for the kids. I wasn’t really hungry but asked her to make me some scrambled eggs. There was a method to my madness as I knew she’d have to go into the refrigerator to get the eggs. I only needed a few seconds to grab the mystery item and that move gave it to me. With it firmly ensconced in my hand I headed for the bathroom. I took a deep breath as I allowed it to unfold over the sink. It was a pair of still damp, well worn white nylon panties. As much as I wanted to take a close look at them and find the label I didn’t want to take too long so folded them up and stuffed them in my pants pocket. I knew Elle wouldn’t go there so I felt I was safe.

It took until after lunch for me to get the close look at the panties that I was now dying to see. In just the few seconds I'd handled them I could fee that they had the satiny feel that I so loved. Once out in the garage and in my car I pulled them out. There were a number of things that jumped out at me. First was the crotch. It was about as wide as the original Carter's Spanky Pants, four and 1/2 inches. In all the panties I'd seen and handled I'd never see nylon panties with a crotch that wide. The next thing I noticed was that it didn't have as much of a curve to it on any of the sides especially around the leg openings. The third thing was the leg elastics. That, too, was a first. It wasn't lace but it was lace like. The waist elastic wasn't all that unique but it seemed to be quality and it did have the word "second" stamped on it. The disappointment came when I tuned the panties inside out and there wasn't a label. By that point I was already planning my next wash line "raid".

The "no-name" panties

I'd done my inspection inside the garage and car and even though the sun was out there wasn't very much light. I went outside to make sure Elle was around and, not seeing her, held them with the afternoon sun shining on them. I'd said they were well worn but in the light of day it was obvious that these panties had been wet many times by the staining in the crotch area. It added some mystery to the girl next door.

Elle had wanted me to get the whole upstairs painted as soon as I got everybody paid off. I'd only painted our room as neither of us could stand the watermelon color but had put off doing the girls rooms for lack of money. Initially, the two older girls had elected to sleep together in the same room. They'd done it from the time they were old enough to be in a real bed. The room they chose was painted a dark beige which made the room look dull. The girls had elected lavender for their color. The youngster's room had been white but she (read that as Elle) had decided on pink. There wasn't much furniture in either room which made it an easy job. It only took two nights to finish them both. That left the Northwest bedroom. Elle decided that a bright yellow would be appropriate. The difficulty was that it had been the room for one of the previous owner's sons and his color of choice appeared to be a steel blue. Whatever it was, yellow didn't cover it very well and I was bound and determined to do it in one night.

The four bedrooms were exactly the same size. The interior wall housed the all closets which, considering that the house was built in 1934, were ample. However, the room I was painting had two closets. One was a small cedar closet and Elle had already put our wool clothes in it. I'd only been in it once and noticed that there was a raised floor with a drawer under it. While waiting for the first coat of paint to dry I decided to see what, if anything, was in the drawer. It was no surprise to see it empty. What was a surprise was that it wasn't very deep, maybe two feet. I don't know why but I pulled it all the way out. Looking inside it looked like there were some papers way in the back of the cavity. I got a flashlight and when I looked in confirmed that there was an  envelope and loose papers inside. I reached in and pulled them out. There was no writing on any of it but the envelope had something inside. I ripped it open and did a double take... it was money.
